Pledged (Soul Wars Saga #1) by Gwynneth White

Everyone has a soul mate. But what do you do when your soul mate would rather give his soul to the demons than be with you?

Seventeen-year-old Erin has a problem. Seth has been hers forever, but now an ancient promise is tearing him away. And Reuel, the demon to whom the promise was made, will stop at nothing to force Seth to forsake Erin and to worship him.  How can Erin win against a pledge so binding that it has damned countless others to the same fate she and Seth will face if Reuel wins – an eternity alone?
The answer lies in the past. To find it, Erin and Seth must risk all, travelling back in time to a dangerous world where love is forbidden, and life – and death – hang on a promise.
Follow Erin and Seth as they travel to ancient Shenaya to break the pledge that has plagued their families for millennia. Caught in a war between the Angelic Guardians and the Gefallen, the disembodied dead, they must fight to keep their souls in tact and their love untainted.

About the Author

I have spent my entire life living in a parallel universe of make-believe characters, only coming back to reality for long enough to check that no one burnt the house down in my absence. A few years ago I decided to commit some of those ‘friends’ and their stories to paper. The Soul Wars Saga is the result of those efforts. Before that I co-authored two non-fiction travel books – The Complete Guide to 4x4 Trails and The Ultimate 4x4 Guide. Both books became instant best-sellers in South Africa where I live. And before that even, I studied a degree in African History and Politics at the University of Stellenbosch. When I’m not writing, I am a wife to Andrew and a mom to Stephanie, Erin, and Kate, our teenage daughters. My family and I live in a small town outside Cape Town with two dogs, a cat, a horse, and some neglected fish. Now that you know a little about me, I would love to get to know you. Review: The Calling (Darkness Rising #2) by Kelley Armstrong

The Calling (Darkness Rising #2) by Kelley Armstrong

Maya Delaney's paw-print birthmark is the mark of what she truly is--a skin-walker. She can run faster, climb higher, and see better than nearly everyone else. Experiencing intense connections with the animals that roam the woods outside her home, Maya knows it's only a matter of time before she's able to Shift and become one of them. And she believes there may be others in her small town with surprising talents.
Now, Maya and her friends have been forced to flee from their homes during a forest fire they suspect was deliberately set. Then they're kidnapped, and after a chilling helicopter crash, they find themselves in the Vancouver Island wilderness with nothing but their extraordinary abilities to help them get back home.

The Gathering, the first book in this trilogy, was a great start. It was a YA novel full of the supernatural and Native American lore, with some romance and a bit of suspense. The Calling on the other hand was mainly a suspense. I was excited all the time with all the little twists throughout the whole book. It was very action-packed, and there were some parts that gave me goosebumps.
The characters found themselves in a rather extreme situation, and so they gained a bit of complexity. They very portrayed nicely. I have to admit I'm not the biggest fan of Daniel. He is a nice and kind guy, but I'm just not crazy about him. Even though his little confession made him more interesting.
I really like Rafe, he is the mischievous guy with slightly arrogant grin, but he is caring and loyal.
And Maya, the main character, is very likable. With her love for animals and nature, I can't help but really like her. She is a strong female character who is able to be a leader when needed, but she is definitely not flawless. Then again, there is some self-reflection when it comes to her character, which is nice to see.
This is also one of the very few YA novels where I'm really enjoying the romance part.
There was no big climax at the end, but the story progressed a lot. I cannot wait for the last book!

Review: Vampires: A Field Guide to the Creatures that Stalk the Night by Dr. Bob Curran

Vampires: A Field Guide to the Creatures That Stalk the Night by Bob Curran

Vampires is a unique, lavishly illustrated work that explores the rich diversity of vampire belief and lore, ranging from countries as diverse as Japan, Sweden and Ireland, looking at their historical origins, and setting them in their cultural context.

This was a very interesting read! The author takes different geographical areas and talks about folklore figures that are either local variations of vampires, or are somehow "related", but he also mentions other supernatural beings. At the end of every chapter there is a part that tells us how people can protect themselves from these creatures.
This is a good reference book. The text is informative, but it's written clearly and neatly.
Anyone interested in vampires should have a look, but I especially recommend this to people interested in folklore. It is not an academic text, so anyone can read it without having a headache. :)
Before this one, I had read another book by this author, and I'll probably read his other books, too. In his books he covers a large area and in this one he gives you a great overview of the origins of vampires, and points you in the right direction if you want to dig deeper. This might be a good "inspiration book" for writers as well. There are also beautiful illustrations, as you can see, if you scroll down and read the excerpt.

Review: Fated by Alyson Noel

Fated (The Soul Seekers #1) by Alyson Noel

* Proof copy received from the publisher.

Publisher: Macmillan Children's Books

Pub Date: May 24th 2012

Strange things are happening to Daire Santos. Crows mock her, glowing people stalk her, time stops without warning, and a beautiful boy with unearthly blue eyes haunts all her dreams. Fearing for her daughter’s sanity, Daire’s mother sends her to live with the grandmother she’s never met. A woman who recognizes the visions for what they truly are—the call to her destiny as a Soul Seeker—one who can navigate the worlds between the living and dead.

There on the dusty plains of Enchantment, New Mexico, Daire sets out to harness her mystical powers. But it’s when she meets Dace, the boy from her dreams, that her whole world is shaken to its core. Now Daire is forced to discover if Dace is the one guy she's meant to be with...or if he’s allied with the enemy she's destined to destroy.

Let me just start by saying I hadn't read anything by this author when this book caught my attention. I was so curious about the whole Native American theme that I ignored my lack of knowledge of the author's previous work and some of the not so positive reviews of Fated I'd read. I decided to see for myself whether I like the book or not. And I'm so glad I did, because this is, in my humble opinion, a paranormal YA par excellence!

Daire is on the road all her life, from one movie set to another, as her mother happens to be a successful make-up artist. There is no permanent home for the two of them, so there is no room for any friendships or relationships. That's why Daire is a rather cynical young girl who can't let herself care for anyone. She is not happy, but somewhat content. But lately these weird hallucinations started to bother her, and when she experiences a total break down while in Morocco, the future seems pretty bad for her. The only option, besides being drugged all the time in a madhouse, is to go live with her grandmother who claims to know how to help her. And sure she does. With moving into a small town in New Mexico a completely new life begins. Daire learns she is a Seeker, a person who is supposed to keep balance in the world(s) by stopping certain people from using their magic for their evil plans.

I seriously enjoyed the parts of Daire's initiation, all her spiritual and mystical experience while she was guided by Paloma, her grandmother. It was fascinating to follow the change, to see how her character developed. But the best part was the beautiful and strong relationship between Daire and her grandmother that arose out of it.
I think Daire was likeable from the very beginning, even though slightly bratty at times and quite cynical, but still likable. At least for me. But since she met Paloma, she turned into a character I really liked. Paloma was a great character as well. Wise, strong, and kind, providing Daire with a home she so desperately needed.
When it comes to romance, I'm so happy that there was no single "I love you" in this book, and that the relationship is based on much more than just the good looks of the guy. Also, Daire's love interest isn't the only thing that matters to her. She knows her purpose.
The story itself was pretty good as well, though there is still a lot to learn for both the reader and Daire.
All the aspects of this book were intertwined nicely and together created a captivating story full of Native American lore. I can't wait to read the sequel.

BTW, the Mick Jagger joke made me laugh out loud. :)

WATERSPELL Book 1: The Warlock by Deborah J. Lightfoot

Drawn into the schemes of an angry wizard, Carin glimpses the place she once called home. It lies upon a shore that seems unreachable. To learn where she belongs and how to get there, the teenage traveler must decipher the words of an alien book, follow the clues in a bewitched poem, conjure a dragon from a pool of magic -- and tread carefully around a seductive but volatile, emotionally scarred sorcerer who can't seem to decide whether to love her or kill her.

Castles in the cornfield provided the setting for Deborah J. Lightfoot’s earliest flights of fancy. On her father’s farm in West Texas, she grew up reading extraordinary tales of adventure and reenacting them behind tall ramparts of sun-drenched corn. She left the farm to earn a bachelor of science degree in journalism and write award-winning books of history and biography, including The LH7 Ranch (University of North Texas Press) and Trail Fever (William Morrow, New York). High on her Bucket List was the desire to try her hand at the genre she most admired. The result is WATERSPELL, a complex, intricately detailed fantasy that begins with Book 1: The Warlock and Book 2: The Wysard, and concludes (for the present) with Book 3: The Wisewoman. But a legal pad filled with notes and tucked away in a desk drawer suggests a possible Book 4 before the saga may fairly be said to be finished.

Excerpt:

Chapter 1.

The Swordsman

It happened too fast to hurt at first. But, oh! the blood—lots of it, streaming from a gouge that crosscut her knee.
She hunched over the wound, her masses of unkempt hair tumbling around her face, strands of it trailing in the gore. Blindly Carin fumbled in her belt-pouch for something to stanch the bleeding. Her fingers met only flint and steel for fire-making, pebbles for arming her sling, and a length of twine that was useful for everything from tying back her shaggy auburn mane to rigging a brush shelter.
Abruptly a hand grasped the shank of her leg, and another shoved at her shoulder. “Straighten up,” her captor snarled.
Carin threw back her head and flung the hair out of her eyes. “You!” she gasped. “But—” She hadn’t heard the swordsman’s approaching footsteps—a seeming impossibility through the crunchy carpet of autumn leaves. Yet here the man was, crouched beside her and brandishing a dagger. Carin’s hand flew to shield her throat, but it was her knee he put the blade to.
Stay away from me! she wanted to shout at him. She couldn’t get the words out—not in a way that made sense. As sometimes happened when she came unglued, Carin lapsed into a language of her own. The sounds that passed her lips weren’t gibberish, but no one ever understood a word she said when she got like this. Carin yelled at the man, in her own private language, and tried to wrench free of his grasp.
“Stop your noise,” he barked. He held her leg tighter and waved his dagger in her face. “If you can’t be quiet, I’ll cut out your tongue.”

Review:

In the beginning a wise woman tells Carin, the main character, to go North, as she does not belong in the South. Then we see Carin as she trespasses Lord Verek's land. He threatens to kill her unless she explains how she could enter his land, which is protected by powerful spells. It is obvious she is immune to magic, but why? And so the complicated story begins.

At first I thought the writing was too wordy, but then I got used to it and actually, it suits the story. I also liked how all characters had their own dictionary, because it makes all the difference. Some books are written in the same tone and language, even when it comes to dialogues, which can really hurt the book. This was not the case!
There were only a few characters, but they were all special and enjoyable in their own way. At first I wasn't sure about Carin and about her actions. Then I realized how scared she was and why and everything made sense. She and Lord Verek were the two most complex characters. And he was just mesmerizing! I mean dark, dangerous, slightly rude, yet still somehow gentle and tortured by his tragic past. What's there not to love? And the relationship between him and Carin was amazing. Full of repulsion, fear, but also fascination with each other. Great. Just great.

"The library door thudded closed behind her. The swordsman brushed past her shoulder, so close she could smell him. Coming from the man or his clothes was the odor of calendula oil, a musky scent that mingled with the woody, leathery smell of old books."

Myra, the housekeeper, was a kind and caring woman who was cheerful all the time and her presence balanced the darkness and melancholy of her master.
The sweet mare was probably my favourite character. ;)

The story evolved rather slowly, which I don't mind. But there were some moments when it was slow even for me. Overall, it was a nice fantasy read with great characters.

Moon Called (Mercy Thompson #1) by Patricia Briggs

Mercy Thompson's sexy next-door neighbor is a werewolf.

There are legends among some of the Native American tribes about the skin-walkers. Skin-walkers are those who can shift into an animal whenever they want to. I love all mythology, folk-tales, and legends and the Native American ones I find especially interesting. So when I learned that the main character in this series, Mercedes Thompson, is a skin-walker, I had to read it. Only because of this, and how happy I was when I finished reading it, because the rest of the book was great as well! :)

In the wold of Mercy Thompson, some of the supernatural beings came out of the closet, but the werewolves still haven't. Mercy knows all about them, because she grew up with the most important pack in the North America. Now the Alpha of this pack, Bran, thinks it's time for the werewolves to let the world know they exist as well, and this of course leads to big trouble, as some of the werewolves don't agree.

I loved Mercy, she is a kick-ass girl with degree in English who knows how to repair your car! But she is also very kind, caring, empathic, and has some interesting past. Other characters were enjoyable as well, very complex, which I always appreciate.
There was no rushed romance, another thing that appreciate very much! And the two love interests, Adam and Samuel, were both adorable, though I like Sam a bit more. At least for now.

In Moon Called Patricia Briggs managed to create an intricate world full of interesting and complex characters, complicated relationships, and a story with a great plot. And this is just the first book, I can imagine that the second one is even better.
